22/52: While I Was Sleeping

Kath's Bookshelf / Saturday, September 29th, 2018

Before I headed off on holiday just over a week ago, I tortured my heart by reading a Dani Atkins book. My mum had read While I Was Sleeping a couple of weeks before and she wanted to speak about it with someone so badly she bought me my very own copy. I have since made myself a promise not to read another Dani Atkins novel* as there is, I’m certain, not enough sellotape in the whole world to fix my heart. This year I have stupidly challenged myself to read fifty-two books, a challenge you can check out over on my Goodreads account. Without further ado, here is my review of While I Was Sleeping by Dani Atkins.

Maddie and Ryan are just a couple of days away from their wedding; head-over-heels in love and with a baby on the way, you can’t even brace yourself for the heartbreak that comes next. After being hit by a van, Maddie wakes up in hospital seven years later, confused and frustrated that it’s not just a matter of hours until her and Ryan’s wedding. Everything has changed and Maddie aches for a past she never got to live.

I’m so worried I’ll give anything away as I’d never forgive anyone (not even my mum!) if they ruined a Dani Atkins novel for me. While I Was Sleeping is so heartbreaking but so addictive; it was my best friend throughout a few lunch breaks at work. It was a book that made me incredibly disappointed to see the lunch hour was over. I really like the development of the characters in the novel, and the overall plot. I did, however, feel very frustrated with the ending and actually finished the book unsure of whether I liked Ryan. I think he went through more than challenging situations however I feel, surrounded by very strong characters, he, in the end, appeared quite weak and a difficult character to completely love.

Up until the very end this book I would have rated it five out of five. Overall, however, it’s one of my favourite books of the year so far. Dani Atkins writes absolutely brilliant stories; equally as beautiful as they are stunning. I broken-heartedly recommend this book if you’re looking for a page-turner.

I rate While I Was Sleeping by Dani Atkins as 4/5!
