Having visited The Guinness Storehouse, made our own gin at the City of London Distillery and eagerly (Aaron may as well have had his hand up in the air, in response to the guide’s probably rhetorical questions) attended a wine tasting event at Vagabond, Aaron and I like to consider ourselves as amateur alcohol connoisseurs. If you made it through that never-ending sentence (sorry to all English teachers out there!), you probably think we should take part in a year-long Dry January. And you’re probably right. But, with a trip booked to the Edinburgh Gin Distillery in a month’s time, we’ll give it a thought once we’ve recovered from that adventure. (The gin shakes are the new vodka shakes, I’m telling you.)
Since we enjoy a drink or five (sorry mum!) every now and then, Aaron and I like to think we are qualified to make our very own cocktails. On our day off this week, Aaron made a rum-derful cocktail that transported me to somewhere very, very far away. As in somewhere with palm trees and sparkly sand. By the third sip, I was tempted to book a summer holiday there and then. For the sake of your bank account, I recommend drinking this cocktail after turning off the internet. Here is Aaron’s very rummy cocktail recipe.
Ingredients | For one
- 50ml dark rum
- 15ml grenadine
- 10ml sugar cane syrup
- 20ml lemon juice
- 10ml orange juice
- 40ml tropical juice
- Slice of orange
- Ice cubes
- Add a few ice cubes to your cocktail mixer. Then add the rum, sugar syrup, grenadine, lemon juice and orange juice.
- Shake altogether and fill your glass with ice.
- Strain the liquid into the glass before adding the tropical juice to the glass.
- Garnish with a slice of orange.
If you’re well and truly ready to wave off winter this weekend, I recommend doing so with this cocktail in your hand. Thank you Aaron for letting me steal your recipe but, more importantly, thank you for giving me one of your cocktails! I expect at least one of these on our every day off together.
